Genetic Education
Since 2008, the MJD Foundation has been very committed to ensuring that our Indigenous families affected by MJD in the Northern Territory have access to regular and culturally appropriate genetic education and counselling. The MJD Foundation has worked with Medical Geneticist Associate Professor John MacMillan since 2008 to develop Genetic Education resources (such as our Genetic Booklets). From 2008 until early 2011 the NT Dept Health and Families engaged Genetics Queensland to provide Genetic Counselling and testing services, however the MJD Foundation supplemented these services to allow Assoc Prof John MacMillan to engage more frequently with communities and more widely within communities. | |
| | In early 2011, the NT Government contract with Genetics Qld was completed, and the NTG is determining what services will be provided in the future. The MJDF is continuing to work with Assoc Prof John MacMillan directly to ensure continuity of services to our clients and to facilitate community visits and genetic education sessions for individuals, families, clinics, schools, aboriginal land councils and other community groups. In October 2011 the MJD Foundation and the General Practice Network NT (GPNNT) ran a series of Workshops called "Genetics in General Practice" across 5 locations in 5 days aimed at providing genetic education to health professionals. |
